Penguin Families Grow

Denver Zoo recently welcomed a trio of penguin chicks, representing two different species. Two African penguins hatched on January 28 and February 11, and a Humboldt penguin hatched on February 14, the third hatch of its species at Denver Zoo since 1998.

The Gerenuk Family Has Grown

Denver Zoo is thrilled to announce the birth of Blossom, the first gerenuk (Gare-eh-nook) ever to be born at the zoo. The six-pound, female calf was born March 6 to mother, Layla, and father, Woody, and is the third generation female currently living in the gerenuk exhibit, including Layla's mother, Sushaunna. Blossom will be on exhibit when weather allows, but baby gerenuks are excellent at hiding, so it may take some time and patience to see her. Gerenuks are a species of antelope with long graceful necks and the unique ability to stand on their hind legs to browse hard to reach leaves in trees. Watch video here.

Welcome new Red Panda "Chewbacca"

Just in time to celebrate Valentine's Day, Denver Zoo welcomes Chewbacca, a six-year-old red panda from Detroit Zoo, to live with resident six-year-old red panda Daisy. The two have been paired under the recommendation of the Species Survival Plan, which ensures healthy populations of genetic diversity among zoo animals. Denver Zoo's last breeding pair, He-Ping and Sophia gave birth to six cubs between 2008 and 2009. Red pandas don't mind the cool winter weather, so stop by and you might get to see Daisy and Chewbacca on exhibit.

Welcome female Asian Elephant "Kimbo"

Kimbo, a 42-year-old, female Asian elephant from Fort Worth Zoo arrived safely at Denver Zoo last night and is getting acquainted with her new state-of-the-art indoor quarters inside Toyota Elephant Passage. She is the first new female elephant to move into the exhibit and will eventually join longtime resident elephant Dolly as a herd mate. Weather permitting; guests will be able to see Kimbo in late January after she clears a mandatory month-long quarantine process.

Triplet Lion Cubs Arrive from Qatar

The pitter patter of little paws can now be heard in Predator Ridge for the first time since 2006 with the arrival of three lion cubs from the Royal Family of Qatar. The three cubs, including two males, Tsavo and Enzi, and female Sabi, were born June 24, 2012 and will likely only live at Denver Zoo temporarily until permanent homes are determined. Weather permitting; visitors can see the triplet cubs in Predator Ridge during the next few months of their temporary stay.

Toyota Elephant Passage Welcomes Tapir Calf

Zookeepers at Toyota Elephant Passage welcomed a male Malayan tapir calf named Dumadi into the world on September 3. He is alive and well thanks to the heroic efforts of two Denver Zoo staff members who helped free him from his amniotic sac and provided mouth to snout rescue breaths and manual stimulation to start his breathing. Dumadi is the first birth of his species at Denver Zoo and he loves to swim and dive in his indoor pool. Like all tapir calves, his coat pattern resembles a brown watermelon with white stripes and spots. Dumadi and his mother, Rinny, will remain behind the scenes for now, but will hopefully explore their outdoor yard soon.
