Say Goodbye to Two Departing Gorillas Before They Leave Denver Zoo female Western lowland gorillas JoRayK and Jabali (pictured, right) soon will join a lone male gorilla named Husani at Hogle Zoo in Utah. Zookeepers hope the move will in turn encourage Jim, Denver Zoo’s 23-year-old silverback to breed with Angel, a 23-year-old female of his troop. The two are matched under recommendation of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums’ (AZA) Species Survival Plan (SSP) which ensures healthy populations and genetic diversity among zoo animals. “Although we will miss them both, this is what’s best for the gorillas in our zoos as well as those in the wild. We are looking out for the best interest of this critically endangered species,” says Curator of Primates BJ Schoelberl. Come check out the gorillas before they prepare to leave for Utah in mid-August.
