Denver Zoo Takes Green Award Top Honors – "Winning the Association of Zoos and Aquariums' first Green Award, bolsters our belief that we are the greenest zoo in the country," says Sustainability Coordinator Jennifer Hale. Honored on September 16 at AZA's annual conference in Atlanta, Denver Zoo won based on its holistic approach to sustainable operations and use of metrics to measure success and create benchmarks for future improvements. The zoo's accomplishments include an innovative waste to energy system for the new Asian Tropics exhibit that will open in 2012; numerous water conservation projects the past 10 years; e-waste recycling programs; education outreach and an Eco Pass benefit for employees that encourages alternative commuting options. Asian Tropics Construction Nears Completion – The Asian Tropics construction site is looking green. And we mean actual grass has been seeded and is growing. Soon, all that will be left to do is add animals. Pools are filled with water, hydraulic doors and gate systems are being tested and new substrate and resin flooring in the Clayton F. Freiheit Elephant Building have been installed. Final touches have been applied to Peter and Ella's Crossing (the animal transfer bridge) and the El Pomar Asian Pavilion, which will house flying foxes, Asian small-clawed otters and fishing cats. Denver Celebs Roast Dr. Fitzgerald – Several "friends" will roast one of our favorite Denver Zoo supporters, Dr. Kevin Fitzgerald. The well-known veterinarian and Denver Zoo trustee is celebrating his 60th birthday and 25th year in comedy with the special comedy event at 7:30 p.m. on September 28 at Comedy Works, The Landmark DTC. Josh Blue, Steve "Mudflap" McGrew, Michael Floorwax of KRFX, the Fox and roastmaster Chuck Roy will be poking fun at Fitzgerald. Grosser the Better at Mini-Camp – Explore strange animals and their odd habits at Denver Zoo's Mini-Camp: Animal Grossology on October 28. The all-day mini-camp (9 a.m.-4 p.m.) lets kids pre-K through fifth grade spend a fun day during school break, discovering animals and making new friends. Green Sprouts Fest Will Help Parents – The Redirect Guide Green Sprouts Festival on October 9 at Denver Zoo is an all-encompassing learning experience for new parents.
