Polar Bears - Lee and Cranbeary
Polar Bears Enjoy Introductions – Denver Zoo polar bears Lee and Cranbeary are getting along great just in time for breeding season. After smelling, hearing and seeing each other behind-the-scenes, they were recently allowed into the same yard at the same time for a formal introduction. Lee, a 12-year-old male, came from Detroit Zoo in November as part of a Species Survival Plan (SSP) recommendation from the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA), which ensures healthy populations and genetic diversity among zoo animals. Cranbeary, a 10-year-old female born at Denver Zoo in 2001, returned to Denver Zoo in 2010. Neither bears have ever bred before. If they were to produce cubs it would be very important for the vulnerable wild population and the zoo population, which consists largely of older bears. March and April are the typical breeding months for polar bears in Denver. Watch video of Cranbeary and Lee playing together here.

Toyota Elephant Passage

Toyota Elephant Passage Greener with Better Air – You'll be breathing a little easier when you visit Toyota Elephant Passage. The buildings were installed with extra ventilation to improve indoor air quality. Monitoring systems sound an alarm when air conditions or temperatures vary by 10 percent. All carpets, paints, coatings and adhesives used in Toyota Elephant Passage are low in VOCs (volatile organic compounds), making them better for human and animal health as well as the environment. This is another effort to gain the "green" standard of LEED certification for the exhibit. Click here to learn about other green initiatives in Toyota Elephant Passage.
