Three's Company in the Gerenuk Yard –
Denver Zoo’s wildly popular gerenuk, Woody, has a couple of new roommates. Two females, named Sushaunna and Layla, just arrived from Disney’s Animal Kingdom in Bay Lake, Florida. They arrived under recommendation of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) Species Survival Plan (SSP) which ensures healthy populations and genetic diversity among zoo animals. Gerenuks are a species of antelope with the unique ability to stand on their hind legs completely vertical. Combined with their long necks this makes it easier to browse hard to reach leaves in trees. Watch a video of all three gerenuks here and watch Woody stand on his hind legs for husbandry training here.
