Chilean Flamingo Trio Hatches - The flamingo flock has grown by three with a little help from zookeepers. Because flamingos are highly territorial eggs are often broken or dumped into the pond. Zookeepers avoided this by taking the eggs early and artificially incubating them. The Chilean trio hatched between late July and early August. Keepers then placed the chicks in the care of adult birds on exhibit. Guests can see them now on Flamingo Island.
Zookeeper Ditches Car for Commute -
Matt Lenyo, a zookeeper in Toyota Elephant Passage, has committed to use alternative transportation to commute to work for the next year as the second winner of the zoo's Wild Ride Challenge. The challenge encourages employees to give up their car for a year for commuting to promote healthy lifestyles and reduce the carbon footprint of our staff. Matt is supported by a team of six other zoo staff members who have also committed to increase their use of alternative transportation. Find us on Facebook or Twitter to keep up with Matt as he tackles a year without his car!
