15 Year Program Welcomes New Hatchlings - Two black breasted leaf turtles hatched in Tropical Discovery on July 30. Since 1998, Denver Zoo has been involved in a population management program to breed this species which is classified as endangered by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN). This species is challenging to breed as eggs are often infertile and hatching can be difficult. Keepers often help the hatching process by assisting in opening the eggs. The two new turtles were able to hatch on their own, possibly because of some subtle adjustments made by keepers after reviewing years of breeding records. The hatchlings are not currently on display, but will soon be placed in the public viewing nursery in Tropical Discovery near the Komodo dragon exhibit.
