Bert the Hippo's birthday cake
Bert the Hippo Turns 56! - Guests helped celebrate Bert the hippo's 56th birthday last weekend by singing to him and watching him enjoy a special treat. He received a healthy cake topped with bananas and apples, some of his favorites. Bert, short for Bertie, was the first hippo to ever reside at the zoo, arriving at here in 1958 at only two years old as a donation from Arthur E. and Helen Johnson. You can help support his health by making a donation to support his Cosequin supplement which helps him maintain healthy joint cartilage in his golden years.

Plants in Toyota Elephant Passage
Authentic Plants Thrive in Exhibit - A visit to Toyota Elephant Passage is an authentic Asian experience, right down to the plants. Before the exhibit's completion, the zoo's horticulture staff flew to Florida to select specific plants that you would actually see in Southeast Asia. From citrus trees to palm trees and water lilies and bamboo, they all help create a thematic backdrop for the buildings and animals. While they're all thriving in Colorado's summer, many will be taken back to the zoo's greenhouse in the fall to stay warm during winter. Learn more about Toyota Elephant Passage's details here.

Ram in Mongolia

Plants Share Animal Stories - Plants provide a variety of resources to people and animals. Zoo conservationists are now working on a vegetation study in Ikh Nart Nature Reserve located in Mongolia, to research how Mongolian species utilize plants. Researchers will map out sections of the reserve to determine plant abundance and coverage. In creating a vegetation map throughout Ikh Nart Nature Reserve, researchers can continue Denver Zoo’s work in understanding species home ranges and habitat use.
