Finally arrived in Mongolia after flying for over 20 hours! It felt good to step off the plane and stretch our legs and get my first glimpse of Mongolia.  Denver Zoo has been working in Mongolia since 1996, helping to create Ikh Nart Nature Reserve and initiate a long term research project.

 

 

In conjunction with the research being conducted at the reserve, an education and outreach program was established in order to connect the community with the research being conducted and to better meet Denver Zoo’s mission of Securing a Better World for Animals through Human Understanding. The goal of my visit to Mongolia was to initiate and implement the education and outreach components of the Ikh Nart Education and Outreach program.

Woke up today and hit the streets of the capital city Ulaanbaatar to pick up a few supplies that we would need before our train ride out to Ikh Nart.  Ulaanbaatar is a lively city with a population of over a million residents, a juxtaposition of nomadic traditions and modern society. Walking down the street we saw businessmen as well as traditional clothing clad herders!
