Today we got up early and headed out into the steppes of Ikh Nart to study Argali sheep. Ikh Nart Nature Reserve covers around 66, 700 hectares and is comprised of a semi-arid desert steppe. Walking you see vast blue skies, impressive rocky outcrops and land that stretches beyond the horizon. Denver Zoo has been conducting research in Ikh Nart since 1996 in collaboration with the Mongolian Academy of Sciences, working together to conserve one
of the last wild places on earth! Today we were tracking Argali sheep, using telemetry. Ikh Nart is one of the first long-term research projects that utilized telemetry to the ecology of Argali. Telemetry is a type of technology that allows data to be collected from distances. At Ikh Nart, Argali sheep are captured and fitted with radio collars, which store information on their location.
