Notes from the Field - Peru

We got up early today and went to Forest y Faunas breeding facility in Lampa. The drive to the facility was very beautiful going through the Alto Plano. Lampa was also a very interesting village with a very cool cathedral in the town square. In Latin America it is very common for the town center to be centrally located around a cathedral and a central park. The breeding facility was another story. A big part of this trip is basically a quest for conservation needs in Latin America. Denver Zoo is considering a focal area for conservation in Peru. The breeding facility had about 100 Chinchillas in it. Through our meeting with Forest y Faunas, they asked for our help in continuing this program. The funny thing is that the Chinchillas they were breeding in the facility were Argentina Chinchillas not Peruvian species, which are endangered. Apparently they were given the wrong species and have been working with Argentina chinchillas since 1968. I discussed with my colleagues and we agreed to help out with their program.

The next day we traveled to Copacabana, Bolivia by bus. Went visited Lake Titicaca and looked at a little ecotourism center which was focused on the Lake Titicaca Frog. This was a very cool island constructed out of reed that had a little educational hut where you could see live frogs. We snorkeled and caught some frogs. We are hoping to use this facility as a center for education tourists on the importance of the Lake Titicaca Frog. Copacabana was a cool town that seemed different then Puno, which is where most of our trips are focused. Copacabana had a lot tourists that were visiting the city and the nearby lake, which would be a great opportunity for eco-tourism and the promotion of Lake Tititicaca.
