Notes from the Field - Rocky Mountain West

we were not expecting too much but at the first site one trap was closed and we had caught our first mammal. Luckily identifying the mammal wasn't too difficult because its long tufted tail gave it away as a Kangaroo Rat. That afternoon we headed down to a swimming hole in Carrizo Canyon. Swimming was a great way to deal with the 100 degree weather! Once it cooled down in the evening we headed out to open up the traps for the night and on the way home we caught a glimpse of a swift fox standing outside its burrow!

We caught two animals today, the first was a silky pocket mouse and the second was a box turtle. We definitely weren't expecting the turtle in our small mammal traps so it was a great surprise to see it sitting in the entrance of the trap.
