Notes from the Field - Rocky Mountain West

Instead of going to bed after dinner we then went on a cool night hike. The stars were so beautiful and clear which was definitely better than the small amount of stars you see in downtown Denver. What made the hike even better was that it wasn’t too hot. On the hike we saw this cool bird that we kept seeing on the dirt trail. None of the group knew what kind of bird it was so we used this animal guide and found out it was a common poorwill, which was cool. After the night hike we went to bed.

Today we went out to the two sites again looking for mice. We caught a lot but most of them were recaptures. We caught mostly Grasshopper Mice and one Western Harvest Mouse. After we were done checking the traps and processing them we came back to the house and played lots of games. Around one o’clock we went an hour away from where we were staying to go to the two other sites. There we saw lots of different farm animals such as goats, long haired cows, horses, and pigs. We got to see a man putting h orse shoes on some very pretty brown and white horses. After we watched that we went to set up the two other sites, a hundred traps each. After setting up and baiting both the sites we went back and baited the other two that are closer to the place we are staying. Once we got back and had all four sites set up we started making dinner. For dinner we had grilled cheese and tomato soup. We had some problems with the butter and by mistake used a lot of butter on one of the grilled cheeses. After dinner and a few rounds of Bananagrams we started making S’mores! Because of all the recent forest fires we had to make them inside. At first we tried with candles but they weren’t hot enough so we moved them to the oven, and started melting the chocolate as well. Everyone was talking about how amazing they were. The s’mores were perfect!
