Notes from the Field - Rocky Mountain West

June 26, 2012

Today is the day before we drive back to Denver. As far as the field work goes we split into two groups. Half of us went to the far sites and half of us went to the two sites that were closer. I went out the closer sites and we caught about 10 mice total. At the first site there were mostly new mice, at the second there were a lot of recaptures. All of the mice we caught today were grasshopper mice. The group that went to the far site only caught one mouse. It was a deer mouse which we had never caught before! When everyone got back we all went straight to bed, and while we napped the adults made pancakes. After playing some more games in the afternoon we went out to bait the traps again. After we got done eating dinner we played a game called names in a bowl. It is kind of like Charades mixed with Catchphrase and it is a lot of fun

Today is our last day. I woke up at 4:30am to go check all the traps and clean up. At the two old sites the other group said they found at least 10 mice at each site. At the new sites we only found two mice, the one they caught the day before plus a new one. When everyone got back we packed up, cleaned up, and left. We said goodbye to Wind River Ranch.
