This is the first time I have been to New Mexico. We set out this morning at about 8:30am from the zoo parking lot. The rest was passed with music and we sleep until we drove through Colorado Springs and saw some of the forest fires.

We stopped at a gas station that happened to have a subway within, and there we ate lunch. The rest of the trip was shorter or so it seemed. Most of us slept on the way. Oddly, the New Mexico side of the border seemed sunnier then the Colorado side. When we arrived at the ranch the resident dog, Gandhi, ran up to meet the cars. Apparently he likes to chase them. After settling into our rooms we took a short tour of the ranch. We first looked at the small river near the trails. We could see small fish and weeds in the river, and when we walked down to get a closer view, and we saw a large number of very small toads. All of them were smaller then a fingernail. Vern later identified them as young woodhouse toads. We also took a look at the rubbish barn, Sara saw a corn snake in the barn and the rest of us went looking for it. Instead of a snake we found a fat looking mouse. We played card games for the rest of the evening. At one point, I brought in a large insect that hissed, and as we soon learned, also flew. It turned out to be a male June bug.
