Notes from the Field - Rocky Mountain West

It was a really cool fence lizard. You can tell which ones they are because they have gray backs and tan stomachs with blue sides. They are cool. We also chased another lizard but never were able to catch him. He was dark with yellow stripes going from head to tail. Later we went over by the barn to look for skinks, we didn’t catch any but I did find a bull snake. Vern and Sara both walked right up to him. He was so beautiful. They think that he had just shed. He moved so fluidly in my hands, the reason for that is each scale on his stomach is attached to 12 muscles.

Happy Independence Day! Today we only caught a short horned lizard but I had a great time celebrating the 4th of July! We headed down the Las Vegas New Mexico for a Parade. The Parade was wonderful, and definitely worth the time to go down there. It had a lot of Mexican heritage and Mariachi singers and it was great to be around other people again. We bought water balloons and a set of lawn games, and Vern spent an hour and a half filling up balloons. Sadly we were rained out so we weren’t able to play volleyball or pop the balloons. However, the food was fantastic! We had bison burgers, hot dogs, coleslaw (yay!), Beans, corn, and watermelon. Hanna challenged me to eat my watermelon in three bites, but I had to take an extra bite to make it all go down.

We didn’t have to check traps today because yesterday we closed them all up. We did that in order to keep unwanted reptiles out of them while no one is at the ranch to check them. All we had to do today was clean up the house and head back to Denver. It was a great trip, even though we all would have liked to see a few more animals.
