Humboldt penguins are native to the Western Coast of South America and are classified as Vulnerable by The World Conservation Union (IUCN) due to habitat loss, hunting, and pollution.
The goal of this research is to better understand where juvenile penguins go for nesting relative to the site where they hatched. Researchers survey the islands of Chile for nesting sites, then mark the chicks for tracking to see if they return to the nesting grounds where they hatched.
Results indicate that only a small amount of chicks return to the nest site where they hatched during the breeding season.
