Frequently Asked Questions about Gift and Estate Planning
Q: Do I need to be wealthy to make a gift to the zoo in my estate?
A: No, Denver Zoo appreciates any size gift, large or small.
Q: Will Denver Zoo publicize or share my name if I make a gift?
A: Only with your permission will Denver Zoo list your name in our publications, On the Wildside and Annual Report, and on the Zoo’s Donor Wall.
Q: Why should I notify Denver Zoo that I have included the zoo in my estate plans?
A: It is important to let the zoo know if they are included in your plans so we can thank you for this gift during your lifetime and include you in our Wildlife Heritage Society.
Q: I don’t have a lot of assets, do I need a will?
A: Yes, it is important for everyone to have a will. Without a will, the government decides what to do with your hard earned assets. By creating a will, you ensure your legacy to family, friends and pets as well as the charities you care about most. And many people have more assets than they realize, for example, their home and retirement assets.
Q: What is the most heavily taxed asset in my estate?
A: Usually, your retirement plan assets are the most heavily taxed asset in your estate. Many advisors point to retirement plan assets as some of the best assets to leave to charity because if left to heirs, these assets are subject to income taxes – and, if left to someone other than your spouse, they are subject to both income and estate taxes (double taxation).
Q: How often do I need to update my will?
A: You should update your will if any of the following changes occur: you move to another state; a marriage, divorce, or death of a spouse; a new birth or death in your family; a change in your assets or finances; a change of your trustee or executor; a change in need of a family member or heir.
Q: What is Denver Zoo’s Tax Identification number?
A: The Tax ID number is 84-0502539. This number can be used in lieu of a social security number when including the zoo in your life insurance or retirement beneficiary designation form.
