Zoo Programs
Middle and High School Students


TEACHERS & GROUP LEADERS:

Inspire your students with a once-in-a-lifetime look into the life of a zoo professional.  Get a closer look into the life of zookeepers, zoo veterinarians, and more! These activity-based, hands-on programs are the perfect way to inspire a group of future animal scientists.

Who:   Groups of 10 to 30 students 6th grade and up (school groups, scout groups, clubs)
When: Weekdays, Sept- May (weekends are possible, call 720-337-1408 to arrange)
Cost: $275 per 2 hour workshop; maximum 30 students.                  
         $525 to combine two, 2 hour workshop topics for 4 hours of programming; maximum 30 students

         Scholarships are available through Denver Zoo's Red Apple Fund.        

Register:
Register online at least 3 weeks prior to the requested program date. 

Upon receipt of your online registration request, we will do our best to honor your date requests.  You will receive confirmation in the mail when your registration has been completed.  A 1:10 chaperone ratio is required for all middle and high school programs. If you have further registration questions, please email registration@denverzoo.org

Available Topics:

All topics include hands-on activities, live animal demonstrations, guided zoo tours, and thought provoking discussions about animal-related careers.
  • Veterinary Health Nut: Delve into the majestic careers related to veterinary care and nutrition of our over 3,500 animals!
  • A Day in the Life of a Zookeeper: Come get an insider’s glimpse into zoo keeping while touring our education animal housing area and learning just how multifaceted a zookeeper’s day can be!
  • Tools of the Training Trade: Every wonder just how the elephant knows how to cross the bridge in Toyota Elephant Passage? Join us and uncover the challenges and triumphs of training animals at Denver Zoo!
  • Zoo Vocation Exploration Get wild and take an adventure around the zoo exploring all the careers it has to offer.

Custom Programs

Work with Denver Zoo educators and experts to boost your middle or high school program of study with a unique career workshop created to meet your specific curricular needs. Workshops will be designed to meet a variety of career exploration topics and can even be designed for younger or older audiences! Custom Workshops have limited availability and vary in price.  Please contact 720-337-1408 to inquire. 

The following components can be incorporated into a zoo workshop:

    • Interaction with live animals and biofacts (animal specimens) in the workshop classroom
    • Guided tours of the zoo
    • Animal observations/data collection in the zoo
    • Guest zoo staff speakers
    • Lectures and discussions
    • Hands-on activities in the workshop classroom or in the zoo

Service-Learning

For an additional charge of $100, we can add a one-hour animal enrichment focused service-learning program to any workshop.  Students will learn about animal enrichment and will create enrichment items (toys) for our zoo’s animal residents.
