Teacher Professional Development Workshops

Enjoy a workshop in one of Denver’s greatest classrooms, the Denver Zoo!  Meet keepers and animals up close and personal.  Go back to your classroom with great ideas for how to link the life sciences with all of your other curricular needs.

Biodiversity in Your Backyard

Have you wanted to bring service learning into your classroom?  Join us as we walk through different methods and projects that will get your students out and about working for and in their surrounding communities.  Projects will be modeled after Denver Zoo’s Community Leadership Project curriculum.

Around the World in Two Days

Always wanted to take a trip around the world?  Well, now you can, without ever leaving Colorado!  You will meet animals from all around the world and come away with new and innovative ways to teach students of all ages to appreciate the world’s amazing biodiversity.

Canoe With the Zoo

Date:  June 25 (at the Zoo) & June 26-29 (on the Gunnison River)
Time:  June 25 (8am – 4pm) & Overnight (June 26 – 29)

Enjoy a Denver Zoo workshop away from the Zoo and on the Gunnison River in beautiful western Colorado.  Spend three days on this ecologically rich river system learning about riparian ecosystems with an expert Denver Zoo educator.  You will receive an overview of riparian and wetland ecosystems, explore interactions among plants and animals that live near or in this desert river, and learn to identify animals by their clues they give such as scat and tracks. 

Creatures of the Night
Grades K-6

Take a day to explore animals that live deep into the night with activities, curriculum, and animal tours and demonstrations.  Learn about these animals’ special adaptations and how to integrate these ideas into multiple disciplines.

Asian Explorations

Join Denver Zoo on a journey to learn about the animals and culture of Asia.  “Travel” to places like Sumatra, Thailand, Malaysia, and Mongolia through guided tours, animal ambassadors, and hands-on activities.  Learn how to make conservation connections in your classroom that help fulfill Colorado Model Content Standards.

The Nature of Conservation Biology
Grades 6-12

Are you interested in bringing conservation issues and action back to your classroom?  Spend two days learning about our conservation connections with animals and plants all over the world.  Take back activities based on critical thinking and hands-on exploration, while learning how individual actions can help conserve our natural resources.

Learning About Lifecycles

Take a day to delve into the different lifecycles of mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, and insects.  We will explore each animal group in depth while taking time to tour the zoo and meet animal visitors.  Standards-based activities will be provided in class.

Discovering Polar Ecosystems
Grades K-12

Colorado may have felt polar this winter, but nothing compares to the harsh environment that animals like arctic foxes, polar bears, and snowy owls deal with all year long.  Learn how these animals make a living with their unique polar adaptations, while touring the zoo and participating in hands-on activities.  Further your knowledge and activity base on subjects including global warming and our polar connections.

Wildlife For Sale (WWF Curriculum)
Grades K-12

Tuition:  $85
Explore the “Wildlife For Sale” curriculum and materials created by the World Wildlife Fund.  This curriculum will provide you with the background information and activity base to bring endangered species issues and conservation back to your classroom.  At the conclusion of the workshop, you will be certified to check out Denver Zoo’s own “Suitcase for Survival”, complete with endangered species biofacts and a curriculum guide.
