College Internship Program:
VOLUNTEER PROGRAM SPECIALIST
Department: Education and Volunteer Services
Reports to: Volunteer Program Manager
Summary:
The Volunteer Program Specialist works closely with the Volunteer Program Manager to organize and implement Denver Zoo’s volunteer program. This position has primary responsibility to monitor and maintain volunteer data and coordinate essential program logistics.
Essential Functions:
- Assist Volunteer Recruitment with recruitment mailings, tracking, application, interviews and web page updates.
- Work daily within the Volunteer Program software Volunteer Works, Vantix and Outlook to maintain accurate records.
- Assist with office procedures such as file management, reporting, phone and email communication.
- Coordinate Volunteer General Meeting logistics.
- Assist with program purchases, supplies and record keeping.
Additional Responsibilities:
- Support the Volunteer Program as needed.
- Maintain excellent communication with Volunteer Program Manager, as well as other Education staff and volunteers.
- Serve as communication contact with other zoo departments and participate in the Events Team.
- Coordinate all aspects of the volunteer clothing process.
- Attend monthly Volunteer Council meetings.
- Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s Degree preferred.
- Two years experience in general business courses and/or ability to demonstrate practical experience in office management and logistics coordinating.
- Strong oral and written communication skills.
- Strong diplomatic and interpersonal skills.
- Experience working with volunteers.
- Ability to remain calm and professional in busy or hectic working environment.
- Ability to work both independently as well as part of a team.
- Demonstrate competency in word processing, data base and spread sheet management.
- Ability to lift 50 pounds.
- Regular schedule will be Tuesday through Saturday with occasional evening meetings required.
Work Environment
This position requires a substantial amount of contact with staff, volunteers and other departments. The employee works in a busy environment with multiple simultaneous tasks.
Duration and Compensation
This position is full-time with medical benefits and a generous vacation package. Starting salary is $28,000 - $30,000.

Temporary Seasonal Utility Worker
Utility Worker is temporary position that performs general unskilled labor duties such as: dumpster and trash collection and disposal, mulch, rake, prune, lawn maintenance, and general cleanup of grounds.
Essential Functions:
- Operates light to heavy equipment used for maintenance, clean-up, and minor/major construction projects.
- Performs Pre/post trip vehicle inspection on equipment for such things as fluid levels, leaks, condition of hoses and belts, tire pressure, lights, and all related areas. Cleans and cares for all tools and equipment needed for job assignments.
- Places and removes barricades, cones, and other traffic control and safety devices in and around work areas.
- Performs exterior maintenance duties such as sodding, fertilizing, turf mowing, pruning and planting trees/shrubs, raking, mulching, watering assigned areas, and picking up litter throughout the zoo.
- Performs trash and dumpster routes.
- Coordinates work in or around animal enclosures with Keeper Staff.
Qualifications:
- Graduation from high school or a GED Certificate.
- Skilled in with landscape equipment.
- Proficiency in both written and oral communication skills; Ability to read, interpret, and apply organizational policy and procedures and other written guidelines to work functions, and to work independently.
- Possess excellent customer service and interpersonal skills. Skill in understanding and following oral, illustrated, written or demonstrated instructions.
- Knowledge of safety hazards and necessary safety precautions sufficient to be able to establish a safe work environment for self and others.
- Must be able to frequently lift (raise or lower) 50- 75 pounds.
- Must possess a valid Colorado driver’s license at the time of application and while employed with the Denver Zoological Foundation.
Duration and Compensation:
- Applicants must be available through September 2008.
- Position is 35-40 hours/week, Sunday through Thursday (including holidays) starting at 10:00 a.m.
- Salary - $11/hour

Welcome to Denver Zoo's College Internship Program!
Denver Zoo’s internships give students the opportunity to use their classroom knowledge in a zoo setting. Rather students are working with the animals, maintaining zoo grounds or assisting with public events, Denver Zoo’s staff is committed to teaching and guiding our interns by advancing their skills and giving them valuable first hand experience.
Denver Zoo's summer internship process begins in January, when we begin to accept applications. Summer internships generally begin in May and conclude in August. Paid internships are funded through the Scientific & Cultural Facilities District. Non-paid internship opportunities (if available) are offered in the fall and winter months.
Internships are offered in the following departments:
Conservation Biology
Office Assistant Intern in Conservation Biology
The mission of Denver Zoo’s Department of Conservation Biology is to engage in scientific programs which make meaningful contributions to the conservation of animals and their ecosystems. This department oversees the support of in situ (in the wild) and ex situ (at the Zoo) conservation projects. Since the inception of the Department, the Denver Zoo has been involved in more than 400 conservation and research projects in Africa, Asia, Australia, Europe, North America, Central America, and South America.
Development Department
The Denver Zoo Development Department is the fundraising arm of the Denver Zoological Foundation, a non-profit organization. The combined goal of the department is to raise funds for the overall general operating budget of the zoo and for a major capital campaign currently in progress. These goals are attained partially through direct mailings, special events, and ongoing outreach programs managed by the Development Department.
The Development Department is led by the Vice President for Development with supporting positions that include Director of Development, Foundations & Government Grants, Corporate Giving, Planned Giving Program, Capital Giving, Special Events and Office/Database Management.

Horticulture
Horticulture internships are specifically designed for college students studying horticulture, urban forestry, landscape design and/or maintenance. Internships provide an opportunity to apply information learned in the classroom to the many facets and daily challenges of public horticulture in a zoo setting.

Animal Care
Zoo keeping internships are available in various taxonomic areas within the animal department: Birds, Mammals and Tropical Discovery (fish/reptiles). Interns gain experience in the daily care of animals, by working closely with zookeepers in diet preparation, animal observation, exhibit maintenance and record keeping. Interns are also exposed to animal training. Interns must be able to lift 50 pounds and enjoy working outdoors. Applicants must be college students studying biology, zoology, wildlife management and/or related fields. Candidates should have career goals consistent with the animal field. Prior animal experience is desired, but not required.
Paid internships are available during the summer in the Carnivore, Bird, and Primate Departments.
Only non-paid internships are available during the summer in Tropical Discovery and Hoofstock Departments.

Registrar
Interns assist with data management activities, including the accession and deacession of specimens, clarifying reproductive events, clarifying specimen histories, and updating taxonomy. Interns will also use the zoo's collection management software to monitor loans and prepare documents for animal transactions. Applicants must be college students seeking a museum studies or an animal related degree.

Marketing/Events
Interns facilitate the summer rental programs and Zoo Lights rentals (corporate events), group sales and consignment program, oversee donation fulfillment, and are responsible for general office duties. Applicants must be college or graduate level students studying marketing, communications, journalism, business, tourism and/or related fields.

Public Relations
Interns assist with planning and implementing public and media relations programs, tourism and community festival programs. Additional responsibilities include research, data entry and general office duties. Applicants must be college students seeking a degree in public relations, business, tourism and/or related fields.

Exhibit Planning and Construction
Interns gain experience in design and construction of zoo exhibits and support facilities working closely with zoo staff, design consultants and contractors. Interns are assigned to specific projects underway in the zoo's re-development program. Internships are available for college students studying architecture, landscape architecture, building construction or related fields.

Qualifications:
- Applicants must be currently enrolled in college or recently graduated.
- Applicants must be at least 18 years old.
- Candidates must provide proof of current negative TB test.
- Animal Care applicants must be able to lift 50 pounds.
Additional internship information:
- Interns earn $9.00 an hour for paid internships.
- Interns may work 40 hours per week, including weekends and holidays.
- Housing is not provided.
