Early Morning Photo Safari
at Denver Zoo

Join us for early morning photography long before the zoo opens to the public at Denver Zoo (7 a.m. - see schedule below) with staff photographer Dave Parsons this spring and summer. (Rain or shine, tickets are non-refundable)

Get the morning light on a variety of animals including Asian elephants, bighorn sheep, arctic wolves, eagles and many more! In addition to the early entry to the zoo, participants can enjoy an exclusive close-up photo session of macaws and raptors as well as a surprise animal!

Photographers have the opportunity to explore on their own or join the group. The session is limited to 25 photographers, 12 years and older. Children under the age of 16 must be accompanied by a paying adult 18 years or older. Cost is $45 or $40 per person for members and includes a great variety of photographic opportunities for the entire day!

Photos taken at Denver Zoo are for your personal use only (including recreational use and photo contests). Commercial photography (for profit-making like stock photography) is prohibited without written permission from our Marketing department. Commercial photography fees start at $250 per image.

7:15 a.m.     Out in the Zoo photographing.

9:00 a.m.     Animal demonstration!

9:30 a.m.     Tropical Discovery opens for
                   photographers. (Opens to
                   public at 10:00 a.m.)
10 a.m.        Continue on your own or meet
                   with Dave Parsons to get answers to your questions.

What to bring:

  • Camera/s with extra memory cards or film
  • Variety of lenses from wide angle to zoom (macro lens is good for Tropical Discovery)
  • Flash and/or flash extender
  • Tripod/monopod (not necessary)
  • Water
  • Snacks and/or sack lunch (or buy your lunch at Samburu Grille)
  • Sunscreen
  • Light raincoat
  • Insect repellent
  • Please wear comfortable shoes and a watch
  • Hat to protect from the sun


Animal areas available for early photography (Outdoor exhibits only. Some animals may not be on exhibit):


Predator Ridge - African wild dogs, lions, spotted hyenas
Felines - Amur leopards, jaguar, maned wolves, servals, striped hyenas, tigers
Northern Shores - arctic  foxes, polar bears, sea lions, seals, wolves
Hoofed Animals - Bactrian & dromedary camels, cheetahs, bongo, African buffalo, eland,Przewalski’s wild horses, musk ox, reindeer, yak, zebras
Aviary - condors, eagles
Primate Panorama - colobus monkeys, hornbills
Bear & Sheep Mountains - Asiatic black bear, grizzly bear, coati, bighorn sheep, Dall’s sheep
Pachyderms - elephants

Photograph our dragon light sculpture, dragon moray eel, Komodo dragons, bearded dragons, and so much more!

Join us for an evening of Zoo Lights and close up photography with reptile animal demonstrations inside Tropical Discovery at Denver Zoo with staff photographer Dave Parsons this
December 4
(tickets are non-refundable).

This will be a fun opportunity to learn how to take macro photos, time exposures and experiment with flash photography.

Visitors will also have the opportunity to photograph and touch some of the reptiles including lizards and snakes during the animal demo!

What to bring:

  • Flashlight/headlamp
  • Shutter release cable (or self timer capable)
  • Tripod
  • Camera Bag or plastic bags (to put your camera into for warmer indoor temperatures to prevent fogging)
  • Camera/s with extra memory cards or film
  • Variety of lenses from macro to zoom
  • Flash and/or external flash
  • Off-camera flash cord
  • WARM CLOTHES and BOOTS!
