Winter Safari Schedule 2019

Happy, Healthy Zoo

Pre-K

Camp Description

Animals at the Zoo have fun in many ways! We take play seriously, and need your camper to help create new forms of engagement for animals and humans alike!

December 30th: Day 1 Overview

**Schedule Subject to Change. Ask your camper the questions below to learn about their day!

Question of the Day

AM: How and why do snakes shed their skin? PM: What does a snake need in its enclosure to help it shed smoothly?

Zoo Exploration

Tropical Discovery. Look for clues about snake skin and what enclosures might contain that helps snakes shed. What did we see? How many types of snakes were there?

Animal Experience

What animal(s) did we meet in our classroom? How was each animal we met different? Which one did we like the best?

Engineering Challenge

Campers design a method to help a snake shed its skin. What did we design? Why is this the best way to help a snake?

Further Exploration

What areas of the zoo did we explore in the afternoon? How did this help us better understand/apply the Question of the Day?

Game

What challenge did we take on at the end of the day? How is a sock similar to a snake’s skin?

Taking It Home

What do snakes need that pets at home also need? How can we make sure our pets at home have what they need to be happy and healthy?

December 31st: Day 2 Overview

**Schedule Subject to Change. Ask your camper the questions below to learn about their day!

Question of the Day

How do you check for eggs if a nest is too high or too hard to see?

Animal Experience

What animal(s) did we meet in our classroom? How was each animal we met different? Which one did we like the best?

Zoo Exploration

Outdoor bird enclosures, Flamingos, and Bird World. Look for clues about high nests in the jungle room and rainforest room, and low nests at the Penguins, Flamingos, and others. What did we see? Is it easy to see inside a bird’s nest?

Engineering Challenge

Campers design a method to check high or low nests (or remove eggs without breaking them). What did we design? Why is this a good way to look for (or remove) eggs? Why do zookeepers move eggs, anyway?

Further Exploration

What areas of the zoo did we explore in the afternoon? How did this help us better understand/apply the Question of the Day?

Taking It Home

What can you teach your friends and family about the challenges of taking care of eggs?

January 2nd: Day 3 Overview

**Schedule Subject to Change. Ask your camper the questions below to learn about their day!

Question of the Day

AM: How can we help Jorge and Fernando when their hooves get too long? PM: How is this the same or different from pets at home?

Zoo Exploration

Big horn sheep, llamas, rhinos, elephants. What did these animals teach us about hooves, horns, or tusks that get too long? Why might this be tough for an animal?

Animal Experience

What animal(s) did we meet? What did we learn about caring for this animal?

Engineering Challenge

Campers build a way to help Jorge and Fernando with their hooves. If time, campers will also apply this to pets at home. How is it the same? How is it different?

Further Exploration

What areas of the zoo did we explore in the afternoon? How did this help us better understand/apply the Question of the Day?

Taking It Home

Why is it important to take care of an animal’s feet? How could you care for your pet's feet at home?

January 3rd: Day 4 Overview

**Schedule Subject to Change. Ask your camper the questions below to learn about their day!

Question of the Day

AM: What type of floors do rhinos like? PM: What type of floor do you think that Chipotle/Pimento the guinea pig would like the most?

Zoo Exploration

Pachyderm Building and TEP Rhinos. What types of floors do our rhinos like? Do they like the same types or different types? Why?

Animal Experience

What animal(s) did we meet in our classroom? What kind of floor did this animal like to walk on the best? How do we know they like it best?

Engineering Challenge

Campers build something for rhino or guinea pig feet. What did we build? Why do we think the animal would like it? What type of floor works best for YOU?

Further Exploration

What other areas of the zoo did we explore? Did we see other examples of animal training at the Zoo today?

Taking It Home

What did we learn about animal needs? Why is it important animals have a home designed just for them?
